A couple of weeks ago I had the flu. One of the things I did to help alleviate my flu symptoms was to brew a pot of flu-fighing tea. I am all for natural health remedies that I can use to relieve cold and flu symptoms.
This recipe is for a full pot of tea, which would fill two large mugs or four smaller cups. Once you try it you’ll know why it’s best to sip this tea slowly — it’s a bit spicy!
- 4 cups of boiling water
- 1 teaspoon raw unpasteurized honey
- ½-1 teaspoon organic turmeric
- ½-1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (organic if you can get it)
- 1-2 wedges of lemon
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped (or finely grated) fresh ginger
1 tablespoon oolong tea (from David’s Tea)
- Bring water to boil.
- Finally chop the ginger.
- Cut some wedges of lemon.
- Pre-warm the tea pot then empty out the water.
- Add the tea leaves and the ginger to a loose leaf tea bag, a Tea Infuser or a Mesh Tea Ball.
- Add the turmeric, cayenne and honey to the teapot. Pour in some of the freshly boiled water and stir.
- At the lemon wedges and fill the pot with the boiling water. Add the teabag and let sit for about 10 minutes.
You can increase or decrease the amount of tumeric and cayenne depending on your tolerance. It will definitely feel hot (as in spicy) to the tongue, however the addition of the honey and lemon will soothe the ‘roughness’ of these spices in the tea. Make sure to stir your tea often as the spices will settle on the bottom of your cup.
I won’t lie — It’s not an enjoyable drink but it’s not horrible. It does helps relieve a sore throat and stomach when you’re fighting the flu.
Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and is great to take when you have the flu because of its high anti-oxidant capacity to boost your immune system. Cayenne pepper helps with muscle and joint pain and can also help with stomach aches and gas. Ginger helps with nausea and offers so many other health benefits that you should probably try to eat it every day. Honey helps to sooth a sore throat and is best consumed in its raw form:

Want the really nasty version?
Many years while visiting my parents and I had a cold. My mother mixed up a cold-fighting concoction, which was downright nasty. I don’t know if it helped reduce my symptoms, or if my brain reacted in such shock to the remedy that it forced every cell in my body to expel the cold!
In a glass or cup add:
- 1 tsp. or more of honey
- 1 tbsp. to ¼ cup of fresh lemon juice
- 1 tbsp. freshly minced or finely grated ginger
- 1 tbsp. cayenne pepper
Add hot water. Mix and drink it down. If you survive but still have flu symptoms, make another cup in a few hours.
